All services are provided free of charge.

Who is really at risk for HIV Infection and AIDS?

The following are known risk factors for HIV. You may be at increased risk of infection if any apply to you.

  • Have you had unprotected sex in the last six months?
  • Have you shared needles to inject drugs?
  • Have you had body piercings or tattoos?
  • If you are male, have you had sex with other males?
  • Have you had multiple sexual partners?
  • Have you had a sexually transmitted disease?
  • Has alcohol or drugs ever influenced your ability to practice safer sex?
  • Have you had sex with someone who would answer "yes" to any of these questions?

AIDS Prevention Education Services

  • SAFETY COUNTS: An HIV prevention program for individuals who are active drug users and not in a treatment program. Safety Counts will teach you how to protect yourself from infection with HIV or Hepatitis C.
  • VOICES/VOCES: A single session HIV prevention workshop on the importance of condom use in preventing HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing

  • Testing is done confidentially.
  • Prevention counseling is included with the testing.
  • Standard testing is a two step process with pretest counseling and oral fluid sampling on the first visit and post-test counseling and discussion of the test results on the second visit.
  • Rapid testing is available at the Health Department and allows you to find out your HIV status in 20 minutes. Pre-test and post-test counseling is included with the rapid test.

Walk-In testing at the Norwalk Health Department is on WEDNESDAYS ONLY from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 5:15 pm, WEDNESDAYS ONLY. All other testing at the Norwalk Health Department is by appointment. Please call 854-7979 for appointment information.
